Nirvana and Pixies producer Steve Albini has died at the age of 61

Steve Albini passed away on Tuesday, May 7, following a heart attack. He notably produced Nirvana’s final album “In Utero” and the Pixies’ debut album “Surfer Rosa”.

It would have an influence on the sound of an entire section of indie rock. Musician and producer Steve Albini died after suffering a heart attack on Tuesday, May 7, his recording studio Electric Audio announced, citing Pitchfork.

While ignoring the term “producer,” preferring to be credited with “the Steve Albini record,” the Pasadena, California, native has co-created some emblematic albums such as In the womb, Nirvana’s third and final album. It was released in 1993, and notably included the titles “Heart-Shaped Box”, “All Apologies”, “Rape Me” and “Dumb”.

Steve Albini was also at the helm of the Pixies’ debut album, Rosa serverIn which we find the famous phrase “Where is my mind?” On their X account, the group paid tribute to the producer by publishing a photo accompanied by these simple words: “RIP Steve Albini.”

The list of artists that Steve Albini has collaborated with also includes PJ Harvey, The Breeders and The Jesus Lizard. French groups, for example Dionysus, also had the opportunity to benefit from the producer’s services.

According to his statistics, Steve Albini has worked on more than 2000 albums, most of which are signed by groups unknown to the general public. A figure in the Chicago punk scene of the 1970s and 1980s, he himself received no royalties for the recordings he worked on, Pitchfork points out.

“The recording of this album is the part of my account for my sake. I created a document that records our Morceau culture, the content of the music that I own”, explain Steve Albini in an entry to the Guardian l’ The last year. “I take this job seriously. I want music to remain for all of us.”

Steve Albini also performed with his own band called Big Black and then Shellac. With the latter, he had just finished recording a new album titled For all trains. A Shellac tour was also on the agenda before Albini’s death was announced.
