Rouyn-Noranda Hospital: bacteria resistant to…

An outbreak of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) is currently active at Rouyn-Noranda Hospital in the medical/surgical department.

The Integrated Center for Health and Social Services (CISSS) of AbitibiTémiscamingue said that “measures have already been put in place to combat the outbreak to prevent the spread of bacteria to other users and visitors, mainly to those weakened by the disease.” »

“Enterococci are bacteria that are commonly found in the intestines and stool of people. In general, enterococci do not cause infection in healthy people. They can sometimes cause urinary tract infections, wound infections, and, less commonly, blood infections. VRE are enterococci that have developed resistance to several antibiotics, including vancomycin. They do not cause more infections than other enterococci, but may require hospitalization and more complex and lengthy treatment,” explained the CISSS de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

VRE is transmitted from one host to another through the environment, medical equipment or poorly cleaned hands. The presence of these bacteria is determined by stool analysis or rectal screening. VRE can remain in the stool for weeks, sometimes months. Thus, carriers may remain carriers at the time of new hospitalization.

The CISSS de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue also reminds that when visiting a hospitalized person, the following measures are recommended:

• Wash your hands upon arrival and when leaving the hospital.

• Wash your hands before entering and leaving the room of the person you are visiting.

• Pay particular attention to the entrance to the premises as there may be a sign indicating that special measures may be required. In this case, you will need to contact the nurse’s office before entering the room for more information.

• Always wear protective equipment as specified (even when drinking or eating). If you are unsure how to wear a gown, gloves or mask, please do not hesitate to ask a member of staff for assistance. If you must leave the premises, it is important to remove equipment and perform hand hygiene.

• Bring as few items as possible into the room (eg coats, bags, backpacks). If there are hooks outside the room, leave your items outside.

• It is important not to use user toilets. They can be infected with various microorganisms, including VRE.
