Security is undoubtedly one of the priorities at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. The lack of sniffer dogs, which are especially expected to be used during the event, is a real problem.

Tensions in the market for sniffer dogs as the Olympic Games approach. By resolving doubts, demining or transport controls, the missions of canine technical teams will multiply. A critical situation, warns Eric, stationed in a dog brigade in the south of France. “There is a lack of personnel, there is a lack of dogs. There is a lack of everything in the police…” he laments. “The work has multiplied by 100 in a few years, but we are almost smaller and smaller, so there is obviously a lack of everything in general.”

Polish soldiers at the time

Apart from the fact that sniffer dogs are not rechargeable weapons in their spare time, their working hours are limited. “You have to imagine that the dog’s olfactory system is a war machine. But it’s a bit like us, when we go into a perfume shop and we smell four perfumes, afterwards, “we can’t tell the difference anymore, you can’t make a dog work for eight hours straight.”

To supplement the canine technical capabilities, Polish soldiers have been called in as reinforcements, dozens of dog handlers from Warsaw are expected to land in Paris in the coming weeks.
