A high school student died from meningococcal infection; thirteen contacted schoolchildren were vaccinated preventively

A high school student from an institution in Pau died of meningococcus on Tuesday, May 7. The high school, as well as ARS, alerted parents. Thirteen students received preventive treatment.

She studied in the first class of the Saint-Dominique Institute in Pau. On Tuesday, May 7, a high school student died of meningococcus. The information provided by the Republic of the Pyrenees was confirmed by ARS. According to our colleagues, the regional health agency of the Atlantic Pyrenees was warned about the latter on Saturday, May 4.

For their part, parents of high school students received two emails from the institution and the regional health agency warning them about the tragedy. Many testify to the shock and dismay they felt after Saturday.

A total of thirteen additional students received prophylactic treatment as part of the protocol established by ARS in case of exposure or suspected exposure.

According to the Ministry of Health, Meningococci are bacteria found in the throat and nose that can be transmitted through the air or saliva. If it does not survive in the external environment, its transmission, only between people, requires contact of less than one meter and for a long time.

They can cause serious illnesses such as meningitis or septicemia. In most cases they do not cause any specific pathology.
