How long can you stay in bed after waking up?

After waking up, it’s nice to spend a few minutes scrolling through social media or reading a magazine or magazine – whether before a long day at work or on vacation.

TikTok celebrates this moment of morning relaxation under the name “hurkle-durkling”an old Scottish word rediscovered to describe time spent in bed doing nothing.

According to Eleanor McGlinchey, a sleep psychologist at Manhattan Therapy Collective and assistant professor of psychology at Fairleigh-Dickinson University, resting in bed before starting the day provides a certain sense of control. We give ourselves a little time to ourselves before the responsibilities rush at us.

For the same reason, many people tend to “revenge for procrastination before bed” that is, hanging out in bed before bed, before going to bed, to compensate for the hours spent working or caring for others. Just like hooliganthis phenomenon is the subject of much discussion on the Internet, accompanied by all sorts of stories about embarrassing experiences and instructions for overcoming procrastination.

Take time for yourself, but consciously

McGlinchey told the New York Times that it’s natural to want to have a say in how you start and end your day. According to her, it is important to use this time consciously and plan it in advance: “Don’t be at the mercy of notifications that come in at night.”

Lying in bed can be relaxing, but it cannot replace sleep. Additionally, for people with sleep disorders or insomnia, it may not be advisable to go to bed very early or stay there for a long time in the morning. Otherwise, the body makes a connection between being awake and being in bed.

So how long is it wise to spend lying in bed before getting up? There is no hard and fast rule, but fifteen to thirty minutes is enough for most people. Those who have no commitments or who find it difficult to give them up for health reasons can, of course, stay in bed longer; even a whole day can sometimes be helpful.

Of course, enjoying your bed is an experience that many people find enjoyable. “But if you start to feel depressed or anxious, or if [le fait de rester au lit toute la journée] causes you to miss work and become less functional, then you need to change course.”stresses McGlinchey.
