Study shows huge toxicity of e-cigarettes: new wave of chronic diseases could ’emerge in 15-20 years’

The study, published on the website Scientific Reports, analyzed 180 different flavors of e-cigarettes or vapes using artificial intelligence analysis. The results are alarming because, according to researchers, the resulting vapors contain dozens of dangerous and toxic substances.

Previous research had already shown that inhaling aerosols after heating the flavored liquid contained in e-cigarettes resulted in the formation of dangerous compounds known as carbonyls. In particular, they can provoke chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular diseases or cancer.

Tobacco-free generation goal: towards a ban on disposable e-cigarettes starting next year

This time, the researchers analyzed the tastes of these e-cigarettes. Analyzing each scent individually can take several years. That’s why researchers analyzed 180 different flavors using artificial intelligence. On this basis, they predicted that e-cigarette vapor produces “127 acutely toxic chemicals,” “153 chemicals hazardous to health,” and “225 irritants.”

Every flavor tested by AI contained at least one health hazard.

Extremely popular among young people aged 15-25, the flavored e-cigarette has become a target of the authorities. As reported by Laatste Nieuws, disposable e-cigarettes will be banned in Belgium from January 1, 2025, and in our country the sale of cigarettes with flashlights or other gadgets is already prohibited.

But for Donal O’Shea, the study’s lead author, that’s not enough. These e-cigarettes pose a significant public health risk, he said: “It is likely that we are on the eve of a new wave of chronic diseases that will emerge in 15 to 20 years from these exposures.”
