Milvue: when AI will increase the productivity of radiologists by 30-40%

According to the Department of Research, Research, Evaluation and Statistics (DREES), approximately 10 million medical imaging procedures (scanners, MRIs, etc.) were performed in French public and private institutions in 2020. Faced with a colossal volume of studies to analyze, radiologists face a significant workload… which often leads to burnout. In addition, such a frantic pace inevitably increases the risk of errors. Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an important tool to assist healthcare professionals and improve the accuracy of diagnoses.

While in France the medical community is still a little cautious about this issue, in the United States things are different. Especially in the radiology sector, which is very interested in the possibilities of AI for the profession. At the beginning of 2024, 38% of industry professionals said they had already integrated AI into their processes, and 62% were considering implementation within the next five years. In the US, 79% of AI-enabled medical devices approved by the Food and Drug Administration are in radiology, followed by cardiology and neurology.

AI is a real asset in healthcare

In France, medical technology is the second most important application of artificial intelligence after data storage and the cloud. According to France Digitale, 15% of startups focused on artificial intelligence in 2023 specialize in the healthcare sector. Among them we find the startup AZmed or even Milvue, founded in 2018 by a radiologist and two engineers. Presented at VivaTech 2024, this young French company develops artificial intelligence solutions aimed at optimizing and facilitating the work of radiologists..

“Our proposal is divided into two main parts: explains Peggy Sejournet, chief operating officer (COO) of Milvue. On the one hand, medical diagnostic instruments, sold for 3 years and focused in particular on the imaging of the lungs, musculoskeletal systems and spine in adults and children. On the other hand, a recent solution for automatic generation of medical reports using voice, based on generative artificial intelligence. It is obvious that in both cases human intervention is systematic. »

Significant increase in labor productivity of radiologists

Milvue’s solutions promise significant benefits for healthcare professionals. “Feedback from the practices we work with indicates that using our solutions will increase radiologists’ productivity by 30–40% while reducing errors that can be associated with fatigue.“, says Peggy Sejournet.

For patients, this means improved quality of care, especially in emergency situations where the speed of X-ray analysis can be critical. From image analysis to voice reporting, the fully automated process is designed to greatly simplify the work of radiologists facing chronic or even structural strain.

For development purposes, Milvue has received support from Microsoft since last year. In 2023, the startup participated in the Gen AI Startup program. “We have benefited significantly from Azure credits to accelerate the development of our automated health reporting solution. The processed data is obviously anonymized before being sent to the cloud. And this one is in France”– Peggy Sejournet clarifies.
