Already suspended, Tonali under investigation by the English Sports Betting Association

Sandro Tonali, suspended for ten months for betting on matches when he was an AC Milan player, faces a new sanction for sports betting made during his first few months at Newcastle.

The problems continue for Sandro Tonali. Already suspended for 10 months last October by the Italian Football Association for betting on sports when he was an AC Milan player between 2020 and July 2023, the 23-year-old Italian midfielder now faces sanctions from the FA for other bets placed as a Newcastle United player.

Sandro Tonali is accused of betting on football matches between August 12 and October 12, 2023, just before the Italian federation approached him in the first case. The FA counted 50 breaches of the regulations, according to the press release issued on Thursday 28 March. The player has until 5 April to explain himself, according to the press release released on Thursday 28 March.

“He retains the full support of the club”

“Newcastle United acknowledges that Sandro Tonali has been accused of misconduct due to alleged breaches of FA playing rules, the club responded. Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations and he retains the full support of the club. Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United cannot comment further at this time.”

Sandro Tonali was recruited for 70 million euros by Newcastle last summer, and has so far only been able to play 12 games with the English club. He admitted that he was addicted to sports betting when the first affair broke out in the autumn. This also led to a seven-month suspension for his compatriot Nicolo Fagioli (Juventus).

In May last year, the English Football Association imposed an eight-month ban on England striker Ivan Toney, found guilty of breaching the rules of sports betting 232 times.
