Mercedes customers win their case

The federation of consumer organizations in Germany, Verbraucherszentrale Bundesverband (VZBZ), won its case before a court in Stuttgart on Thursday in a case related to the CO2 emissions of certain vehicles from the manufacturer Mercedes-Benz.

The organization had initiated a collective action for damages against Daimler, parent company of Mercedes, for manipulating figures linked to the emissions of certain vehicles. Mercedes has announced that it will appeal.

The Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), the German body responsible for issuing vehicle registration certificates, has ruled that the Stuttgart car manufacturer has used unacceptable exhaust technology in thousands of Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles. The targeted models are the Mercedes GLC and GLK.

The manufacturer now has to recall a large number of vehicles. However, Daimler believes that the technology used does not pose a problem.

The number of car owners who are eligible for repairs is not yet known. Part of the complaint was also dismissed and the owners must now take individual action to obtain relief. A total of 2,800 people took part in this collective action.
