Transhumance: more than 5 million people immigrated to the EU in 2022

According to statistics revealed by the Eurostat agency, in 2022 it is estimated that there were 11 immigrants from third countries per 1,000 EU residents. Malta stands out as a leading destination.

Around 5.1 million people immigrated to the EU from third countries in 2022, while 1 million people immigrated from the EU to destinations outside the bloc, according to Eurostat.

The inflow of immigrants from third countries has more than doubled compared to the 2.4 million estimated in 2021, the office emphasizes, noting that, conversely, the number of EU residents immigrating to third countries has remained stable. In 2022, it was estimated that there will be 11 immigrants from third countries per 1,000 EU residents, according to Eurostat.

In relation to the size of the resident population, in 2022 Malta recorded the highest rate of immigration from the EU and third countries, with 66 immigrants per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Luxembourg (48) and Estonia (37). On the other hand, Slovakia recorded the lowest immigration rate, with 1 immigrant per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Bulgaria and France, each with 6 immigrants per 1,000 inhabitants.

On the other hand, the largest number of residents born abroad (from other EU countries and third countries) is registered in Germany (16.5 million people), France (8.9 million) and Spain (8.2 million).

In terms of the percentage of people born abroad in relation to the total population, Luxembourg ranks first with a share of 50.4%, followed by Malta (28.3%) and Cyprus (22.7%). The lowest share was recorded in Poland (2.5%), Bulgaria (2.6%) and Romania (2.8%).
