The International Horticultural Exhibition Expo 2023 Doha closed its doors last night after a closing ceremony marking the end of the 179 days of the Expo, which brought together more than 4.2 million visitors.

Bringing together dozens of countries around the theme of “Green Desert, Better Environment”, represented by gardens and pavilions, Expo 2023 Doha was the first international horticultural exhibition organized in the Middle East-North Africa region and the first to be held in an arid climate . It took place in Al Bidda Park, in the center of Doha, on an area of ​​170 hectares divided into three zones: an international zone, a family zone and a cultural zone.

The exhibition organizers, international participants, teams, volunteers and visitors celebrated this closing day. The closing ceremony was the highlight of an exhibition that hosted 7,000 events, including 1,727 thematic workshops and 600 shows.

The official closing ceremony was held in the presence of the Minister of Municipalities and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of Expo 2023 Doha, HE Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah, the Secretary General of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), Dimitri S Kerkentzes, and the President of the General Assembly of the BIE, Alain Berger , as well as a number of official representatives, heads of diplomatic missions accredited to the State of Qatar and Pavilion Commissioners.

HE Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah, Minister of Municipalities and Chairman of the Expo 2023 Doha Organizing Committee said that Expo 2023 Doha “benefited from the utmost care, attention and participation. committed by all public and private agencies as well as civil society institutions, to reach our common goals and find innovative solutions to the challenges associated with desertification with the aim of creating a green and sustainable environment for current generations and the future”.

Alain Berger, President of the General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), said: “The gardens and pavilions presented in the heart of Doha not only illustrated the horticultural and agricultural traditions of all those present here, but also embodied the creativity, ingenuity and ecological responsibility for every person. Expo 2023 Doha was a demonstration of what is possible. She called for action and international cooperation, for the conservation of our lands, our agricultural heritage and the priceless wealth of our natural environment.”

During the ceremony, the BIE flag was presented to Japan, the host country of Expo 2027 Yokohama, a symbol of continuity between international horticultural exhibitions. Japan’s Ambassador to Qatar, HE Satoshi Maeda received the flag on behalf of Expo 2027 Yokohama, which will be held from March 19 to September 26, 2027 with the theme “Future Landscape for Happiness”.

After hosting thousands of events such as innovation workshops, art exhibitions and the celebration of national days, Expo 2023 Doha is now entering its old phase. For the people of Qatar, the Expo area, Al Bidda Park, will be a new place for nature and leisure, enriched with new permanent spaces such as the Qatar Pavilion and the Expo House, the latter being the subject of a donation to the Museums of Qatar. In addition, through its educational programs, including educational visits and university partnerships, the International Horticultural Exhibition aims to continue its action in favor of dialogue and continue to encourage behavior in favor of sustainable practices and green technologies.

Recognized by the BIE since 1960, the international horticultural exhibitions promote cooperation and the sharing of knowledge and solutions between states, horticultural producers and agricultural industries by exploring important themes related to the green economy, education, innovation and sustainable lifestyles.
