How Android 15 will make some games smoother

Android 15 Developer Preview 2 is out, and with it comes a host of new features. One of them disables the maximum frame rate limit for games running at 60 FPS. Enough to reach 90, 120, even 144 or 165 fps.

There aren’t too many Android smartphones with a screen limited to 60 Hz coming out now: among the models we still find a few models costing less than 200 euros, but that’s all. Today, the vast majority of smartphones released have a panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Yes, but many games are automatically capped at 60 FPS when your device’s performance may well allow them to run at 120 FPS. This is where the new tweaks in Android 15 Developer Preview 2 come into play.

Smoother gaming without having to do anything thanks to Android 15

My very simple example: when I test a new smartphone on FrandroidI’m installing War of clans, a game I’ve been playing for years. The game defaults to 60fps every time, even though it requires very few resources to run.

You can increase the frame rate to 120 by going into the settings and activating a mode that allows you to get a higher number of frames per second. Please note: some mobile games cannot run at speeds greater than 60 FPS; developers may impose technical restrictions. For example, in greedy games like Fortnite Or Genshin ImpactIt is impossible to go beyond 60 FPS when setting the graphics settings.

Reportedly Android AuthorityAndroid 15 Developer Preview 2 introduces settings that will change this situation. His name is ” disable default framerate for games ” AND “ disable maximum frame rate limit for games running at 60Hz ” However, not all games will be compatible with this new setting.

Not all mobile games will be compatible with this new Android tweak.

Journalist and Android expert fromAndroid Authority Mishaal Rahman reviewed the Developer Preview 2 source code and found some limitations regarding this setting. According to him, ” Disabling the default framerate for games in Android 15 will only work for games that don’t explicitly set their own maximum framerate. ” However, some games install it to provide players with an enjoyable experience.

He also discovered in the Android 15 source code that this setting would be used by Android Game Manager, a service used by the operating system’s Game Mode API. For Mishaal Rahman, this means that an actual button may be added to the Android game bar. At the moment the button is hidden in the developer settings.
