The Chinese telecom giant unveiled its new flagship smartphones this Thursday, April 18, with a strong intention to steal the spotlight from the iPhone.
In China, war has been declared again between Huawei and Apple. After the Cupertino company faced difficulties with its Mate 60, equipped with a 5G chip and a processor that far exceeded industry expectations given the sanctions it faces, the Chinese telecom giant has unveiled its new standards.
New 5G chip for Huawei
Huawei has indeed unveiled its Pura 70, with prices ranging from €711 (RMB 5,499) to €1,300 (RMB 9,999) for the Ultra version. Thus, the Chinese manufacturer created a pleasant buzz on the social network WeChat, where it appeared at the top of trends soon after publishing a message to its customers.
For the Pure 70 Ultra, Huawei decided to offer a pop-up camera with an adjustable aperture, which is unusual for this sector, explains Bloomberg. While the company has not revealed the specifications of its smartphones, videos posted by influencers on Weibo suggest that it is the Kirin 9010 chip, an evolution of the Kirin 9000 that powers the Mate 60 Pro.
Returning to the smartphone race with 5G has allowed Huawei to seriously compete with the iPhone. While Apple’s latest model, coupled with price cuts on previous ones, allowed it to establish itself throughout the year, Apple has lost its number 1 status in China since January 2024, seeing its sales fall by 24% year over year. Huawei shows with its Mate 60 and Pura 70 that it is a priori capable of circumventing American sanctions that prevent it from having Android with Google services, as well as Snapdragon chips from Qualcomm.
Thus, Huawei’s overlay, HarmonyOS, runs an open-source version of Android. A lesser evil, especially since most Google services are not available in China.
The official launch of Pura 70 will take place on April 22 in China.
