Time for the third World Marathon Majors of the season with the 44th edition of the London Marathon following Tokyo and Boston. The London race was established in 1981 and is still in demand, as evidenced by the fact that there were 578,374 lottery applications for this 2024 edition!

What is the London Marathon 2024 route?

The start of this fairly flat and fast marathon will be given in Greenwich, and like every year the route will cross important places in London such as Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, Tower of London, Westminster, London Eye, Big Ben or even the River Thames on the last kilometers. The finish line will be located at Saint James Park right next to Buckingham Palace.

When does the London Marathon 2024 start?

London Marathon 2024 starts at 9:15 for the elite wheelchair race (women and men). 45 minutes later, the start of the women’s elite race will be given (at 10:00). This will then be followed by the start of the men’s elite race which is scheduled for 10:40.

The winner of the wheelchair race is expected at the finish line in Buckingham at around 10:30am. For the men, the first runner must arrive around 12.00 and the first female runner around 12.40 p.m.

Who are the participants of the London Marathon 2024?

The Ethiopian Tigist Assefa will become a big favorite among women. At 30, the Addis Ababa native has already won two Major Marathons in Berlin in 2022 and 2023. At the latter, she even broke the world record in a mixed race of 2h11’53”. She will still have to watch the Kenyans Brigid Kosgei (5 World Marathon Majors on the counter), Ruth Chepngetich (2019 World Champion and 2022 Chicago Marathon) by and Peres Jepchirchir (Olympic champion and New York Marathon 2021 and Boston 2022). The first woman to complete the Barkley, Scotland’s Jasmin Paris, will be at the start. On the French side, Manon Trapp (2h25’48”) will be the best French chance.

Among the men, the Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele, 41 years old and triple Olympic medalist will be good at the start. Since the victory in Berlin in 2019, he has not been on the podium and must be wary of his compatriots Mosinet Geremew, second in the London Marathon in 2019 and Tamirat Tola winner of the last New York Marathon in 2023. France will be represented by Hassan Chahdi (2h08’19”).

What are the records for the London Marathon?

Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum, who died on February 11, held the London Marathon record since winning last year on the streets of the English capital. He covered 42,195 km in 2h01’25”, the third best marathon performance in history. For women, the record has held since 2003 and the performance of the English Paula Radcliffe of 2h15’25”.
