Morocco participates in a high-level African anti-terrorism meeting in Abuja

Morocco is participating in the African high-level meeting on the fight against terrorism, which takes place on April 22 and 23 in Abuja, under the theme: “Strengthening regional cooperation and institutions to face the evolution of the terrorist threat in Africa.”

Morocco is represented at this event by a delegation led by the Director of Global Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Ismaël Chekouri.

Chaired by the Head of State of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the opening session of the conference was held in the presence of the Presidents of Ghana and Togo, as well as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat.

The conference, attended by United Nations member states, is organized by the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in partnership with the United Nations Office for Combating Terrorism (UNOCT).

The main concept of the meeting is based on the discussions of the Ministerial Meeting of African Member States hosted by the Government of Nigeria and UNOCT on September 21, 2023, on the sidelines of the 78th High Level Week of the United Nations General Assembly.

This two-day meeting brings together about 32 African countries, represented at the ministerial and national security advisor levels, which have successfully opposed terrorism and violent extremism, as well as representatives of African regional organizations, partner international organizations, and United Nations entities for the global fight against terrorism. Coordination Compact and civil society partners, to exchange on how to address the growing terrorist threat in Africa.

The aim of the meeting is to strengthen multilateral cooperation in the fight against terrorism and to reshape the international community’s collective response to terrorism in Africa, emphasizing the importance of solutions by African states and African solutions.

Addressing issues of regional security and stability in an inclusive manner, the meeting aims to strengthen multilateralism, contributing to a future summit scheduled for September 2024 and the formulation of an action-oriented “Pact for the Future”.
