Basketball. Mael Lebrun (Fougères): “We want to reward our supporters”

Pays de Fougères basketball will play the final in Coupe de France Trophy hair Paris, Friday 26 April. Interview with Maël Lebrun, who arrived at the start of the season.

Maël, you arrived at the club last September. Tell us about your background?

I started playing basketball at the age of 13 in Seine-et-Marne, it was to be with friends, but I quickly saw that it would be much longer. I joined the Ile-de-France center in 2006. I then went to Orléans (Pro A) for 9 years (including 3 years at the training center), which allowed me to go to the U18 team for the European Championship (silver medal) .

In 2015 I left Orléans. I moved around quite a lot in Pro B: 3 months in Saint-Quentin, Le Havre and 3 years in Lille (Pro B). I discovered Brittany by joining URB for 2 years (2020-22), then I returned to the Paris region in Rueil. Then, at the end of the contract, I was contacted by Mathieu Lemercier. Fougères interested me because it offered a sporting challenge and it allowed me to reconcile basketball with my private life.

How have you been since you arrived?

Already I feel very good, I was quickly integrated because I already knew the coach and the players from afar (Cheick Soumaoro, Kevin Neto). That is a basketball IQ that is very impressive for an N2 level team and it is very nice to play with such a team. We also have a top coach who knows how to make us play and develop.

For now, what is the analysis of your season and the team’s?

Personally, I’m satisfied, although I could do better. Rather, I am a strong player defensively and able to score important points in matches. I have this unifying and group leader side. All in all, we have a very good season, we have reached our short-term goals. Now we want to move to achieve the result of these goals, and therefore win the final and move up to N1.

How does it feel to play at the Accor Arena in Bercy?

I’m super happy, it means we’re playing a final. For us it is a match like any other, we prepare in the same way. 1800 people at Bercy, which puts further pressure on us, we want to reward our supporters for their support. It’s a monstrous atmosphere at home so we hope to give them a trophy!
