The emergence of the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus in Corsica: “We don’t know yet whether there is a danger”

Researcher Alessandra Falchi, deputy director of the Department of Emerging Viruses*, has been collecting data on this type of virus in Corsica for six years. The latter draws attention to the precautions that should be taken when bitten by ticks that carry the virus.

Does this virus pose a danger to the population of Corsica? We currently do not know the pathogenicity of the virus. Testing is ongoing and no cases of the disease have been reported in Corsica. At the moment we cannot know whether there is a real danger. It is important to always take preventive measures to avoid tick bites during outdoor activities, as there is no treatment or vaccine for this disease. This is a new disease and problem.
