After 15 seasons with the first team and after winning the King’s Cup this year, Iker Muniain has just announced his departure fromAthletic Bilbao at the end of this historic season for the club.

Iker Muniain began his career at Athletic Club at the age of 12. He is the youngest player to wear the Bilbao jersey, aged 16 during his first official match in the Europa League which took place on 30 July 2009 against the Swiss team BSC Young Boys, in San Mamés. During the return match he stayed the youngest goalscorer in Athletic Bilbao’s history.

During his career with this club, Iker Muniain scored 75 goals in all competitions. He won two Super Cups in addition to the Copa del Rey this year.

“An idol for fans and a role model for new generations”

The club is full of praise for its captain. In a press release, Athletic Bilbao explained that Iker Muniain was an “ideal captain, a role he undertook with humility and integrity, constantly demonstrating his sportsmanship and respect. »

“I came to Bilbao at the age of 12 as a child and today, two decades later, I have to announce that I am leaving the club at the end of the season after 15 seasons in the first team. I am leaving having fulfilled my dream and having brought home a trophy after 40 years of waiting.”

An exceptional event, open to the public, will soon be organized by the club in San Mamés, to say goodbye to one of the legends of Athletic and thank him for all these years. We do not yet know the rest of his career.
