The collapse of the power-sharing agreement between the SNP and the Greens

Scottish Prime Minister Humza Yousaf, from the Scottish National Party (SNP), terminated the power-sharing agreement with the Greens on Thursday, according to the British agency PA and Scottish media. Greens MPs themselves called for a vote on the deal after the Scottish Government abandoned its main climate change target last week.

Indeed, the local executive has recognized that it will not be able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2030 without abandoning its pledge to achieve carbon neutrality in 2045.

The SNP has dominated Edinburgh’s local parliament since 2007, but will govern from 2021 through a coalition with the Greens. The deal, known as Bute House, allowed the Greens to enter government for the first time in the UK and gave the SNP a majority in the Scottish Parliament when its votes are combined with those of seven Green MPs.

The end of the deal, which was originally negotiated by former SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, will leave Mr Yousaf in charge of a minority government at Holyrood.
