Ille-et-Vilaine: producers demand more French tomatoes on the shelves

We see that almost half of the section consists of Moroccan tomatoes, while French growers will throw away their production at the end of the week. We are in a crisis period, we are not getting enough space on the shelves under the guise of purchasing power” regrets Anne-Gaëlle Goyer, tomato producer in Chapelle-des-Fougeretz, who mobilized on Friday, April 26, together with about ten other producers at the Cora hypermarket in Pacé. “We arrive at the beginning of May, we have good volumes of quality French tomatoes. It’s still a shame to struggle with sales when the shelves are full of imported tomatoes.“.

“I am shocked”

Competing on price is impossible but producers inform consumers about quality and French purchases. “In Morocco, people are paid less than one euro per hour. It is not easy to be competitive on prices. If we do not get the chance to be on the shelves, it will be very difficult” adds Anne-Gaëlle Goyer. A hypermarket customer goes to the producers and claims “I completely agree with the French producers. I’m shocked and tomatoes are my favorite vegetable“.

Origin Morocco

Jean Sébastien Genson, based in Janzé, puts ‘Origine Maroc’ labels on tomatoes and boxes of cherry tomatoes. “Customers must be informed that these are Moroccan tomatoes. They need to know what they are buying” explains the producer who, together with his colleagues, denounces a lack of transparency in the display. Brittany is the largest tomato producing region in France.
