Dublin wants to send asylum seekers back to the UK

Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris has asked his Ministry of Justice to introduce legislation to return asylum seekers to the UK to deal with the recent influx of migrants from Northern Ireland, following Britain’s expulsion policy towards Rwanda.

According to Dublin, 80% of recent arrivals to Ireland come via the land border with the UK, opened under the 1998 peace deal.

Mr Harris has asked his justice secretary, Helen McEntee, to bring forward bills next week to amend existing laws relating to “safe third country designations and to enable the return to the UK of ineligible applicants for international protection”. said the Prime Minister’s spokesman.

Speaking on Ireland’s RTÉ, Ms McEntee said she would present emergency legislation to the Cabinet this week to send people back to the UK, ensuring it would be the subject of her meeting with UK Home Secretary James Cleverly on Monday .

On the night of Monday to Tuesday, the British Parliament approved a draft law allowing the deportation to Rwanda of asylum seekers who entered the United Kingdom illegally. Announced two years ago by the Conservative government and presented as the flagship measure of its anti-illegal immigration policy, the project aims to reduce small boat arrivals from the Channel.

Following the adoption of the text this week, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he hoped the measure would be implemented within 10 to 12 weeks. He assured on Saturday that the law has already had a deterrent effect.
