The Security Council expressed concern on Saturday about the growing tensions and military operations around El-Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur state.

UNITED NATIONS, April 27 (Xinhua) — The Security Council on Saturday expressed concern over rising tensions and military operations around El-Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur state.

In a press release, Security Council members expressed deep concern over the imminent offensive by the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) and its allied militias on el-Fasher, home to hundreds of thousands of people who have fled violence raging elsewhere.

They called on the Sudanese armed forces and the RSF, which have been fighting since April 15, 2023, to stop the buildup of military forces around El-Fasher and take measures to de-escalate the situation while respecting their obligations under international humanitarian law.

Council members reiterated their call for an immediate cessation of hostilities. They called on all member states of the United Nations to refrain from external interference and support efforts to achieve lasting peace. They reminded all parties to the conflict and UN member states that they must respect their obligations regarding the arms embargo.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has repeatedly warned against an attack on El-Fasher, the UN’s main humanitarian center.
