A study conducted in the video game space shows a surprising trend of increasing numbers of young gamers belonging to Generation Z.

The dominance of mobile video games in the Japanese market

A Japanese study conducted in 2023 recently made headlines by highlighting video game trends among the country’s young gamers, who are part of Generation Z and range in age from 15 to 24 years old. The study summarizes data collected from testimony from a sample of 700 people interviewed. According to a report compiled Shibuya109 Laboratory, almost 80% of young Japanese play video games, an overwhelming majority. At the same time, the most interesting thing remains the preferred platform of the players. Thus, 94.7% of young gamers in the country would choose mobile devices over the latest generation consoles.

The current generation is ignored by the Japanese

According to this study, Japanese gamers in this age group primarily play on five platforms: mobile devices, Nintendo Switch, PC, tablets and Nintendo DS. The mention of this latest console may seem surprising given its age, but the trend has since been commented on on X/Twitter, as Automaton notes. Japanese Gen Z gamers are primarily looking for portable devices and have been affected by the switch from DS to 3DS.

Free-to-play games will be the most popular in the region, unlike traditional AAA games, which will no longer attract young players as much. But what’s even more interesting is that PS5 and Xbox Series are not on this list. Considering the games these consumers value most, we quickly understand why. That being said, the absence of these consoles could also be justified by the reduced purchasing power of these players, who, according to the same study, only spend an average of 10,446 yen per year, or just under $70 or the average cost. AAA.
