Festive, fun and sporty, Guyana’s first Relay for Life will soon begin. To launch the Pink October campaign, this is a 24-hour operation that will begin on Saturday 5 October at 15:00 and end at the same time.
On the evening of this Monday, April 29, the annual general meeting of the League Against Cancer took place in the town hall of Cayenne.
Guyana Cancer League President Rosine Marudi explains: “Thisthis year is a very busy general assembly because we abandoned major projects such as “Relays for Life”“.
Relay for Life brings together teams of 10 to 15 people who compete in a non-competitive relay race. Members of each team take turns walking, running or walking on the track so that a representative from each team is on the field at all times for 24 hours.
Last year, 28 preventive and informational events were organized. From January to September 2023, 2,896 mammograms were performed.
At least 5,000 people are expected to take part in the first edition of Relay for Life. But this is not the only project this year.
Second major project: La Maison Ligue

Rosin Marudi adds: “ Patients who travel from Saint-Georges, Saul, Maripasoula and Grande-Santi to receive chemotherapy in Cayenne do not need to leave immediately. The Maison Ligue will take place on Avenue de Gaulle, in the heart of Cayenne, in the historical and emblematic building of the Galerie des Trois-Fontaines.“.
Here in Guyana, there are approximately 450 cases of cancer of all types reported each year. In other departments, with the same population size, between 2000 and 3000 cases of cancer are registered.
