Rugby. Bernay retains his title: an exceptional season

See my news

Holders of the championship title won last year at Aigle, SC Bernay (Eure), still unbeaten this season, presented themselves as favorites against their runners-up, Rugby-Club Yvetôtais (Seine-Maritime).

Very difficult playing conditions

A final that was played in persistent rain, which made the playing conditions very difficult. From the first minutes of the game, Vily Hordila players showing his determination not to be impressed by the undefeated Bernayens.

We must not be late to the Alexis Vastine complex, because in the 3rd minute RC Yvetôtais opened the scoring on a penalty awarded at 25 metres slightly to the right of the posts as SC Bernay then led 3-0. But the Bernay players reacted immediately and regained the advantage in the 10th minute with an essay by Baptiste Bril which pierces the Yvetotaise defenses at the conclusion of a great collective action. The test is transformed by Alexis Delepine and Bernay already leads 7-3.

Defensive solidity

Five minutes later, Baptiste Bril did it again and scored his second try in a corner. Untransformed test, but which allows to the players of Harry Spencer and Rudy Gérard to lead 12-3. Bernay dominates this first half despite fierce resistance from Yvetot.

Bernayens has regained his efficiency on the sidelines and is showing himself united and insurmountable in defence. At half-time, SC Bernay is ahead and the supporters, who have gathered in large numbers around the pitch, are very confident.

Especially since shortly after the restart (44th min), Arthur Leboulanger scored the team’s third try. Alexis Delépine is responsible for the transformation. His ball hits the top of the crossbar and falls behind the posts. Relief and smiles among the supporters. SC Bernay now leads 19-3 and seems confident of any surprises. More will not be highlighted in this meeting.

A beautiful finale with a great match on a physical level between the two teams. A “real” rugby match appreciated by the crowd who sing and cheer their players on. A final dominated by a Bernay team that remained unbeaten since the start of the season and showed remarkable defensive solidity (no points given after the 3rd minute).

Collective cheer

The referee whistles the end of the match. Dejected Yveto players congratulate the winners. In the middle of the pitch, the SC Bernay players congratulate each other, sing and start celebrating this historic season for the club led by Sandra Mathieu and which will develop into Federal 3 in 2024-2025. The entire Bernay camp lays down under the posts (players, coaches, managers and main supporters). In this collective jubilation, everyone lets themselves sing their favorite songs.

After the podium ceremony held in the gymnasium, celebration could begin. It will end late in the evening in Bernay after the return of the remaining champions in Normandy.

But the season isn’t over yet. The team is now engaged in the final stages of the French Regional 1 Championship. According to Harry Spencer, SC Bernay were due to face a team from the Paris region at home on the weekend of May 11 and 12.

Coach’s comments

Villy Hordila (RC Yvetôtais): “A slight disappointment. With the rain, we were unable to play our usual game (by hand and quickly). Bravo to Bernay. There were no photos between the two teams. They were more efficient and they are still undefeated. They controlled the game better.”

Harry Spencer (SC Bernay): “A great, well-controlled win. We retain the title of Normandy champion. Today, the team was little changed compared to the match against Dieppe. We score two tries quickly. It was necessary not to be worried in this final. We were not at our best on the touchline against Dieppe. The message got through and we controlled better. We knew they were strong and we held up well physically. I know my players have a certain pride. They have a will to fight that is always there. We are experiencing an exceptional season. We are champions and undefeated. Very happy with the players showing more discipline. Now the season is not over. We will participate in the French championship for R1 teams. The first match will be played in Bernay around May 11 against a team from the Paris region. We will try to go as far as possible. Then we will meet at the club, managers, coaches, players to discuss how we can remain effective in Federal 3.”
