Latest security update blocks VPN on Windows

Windows users using a VPN will have to make do without their virtual private network if they accidentally installed the April security update. Microsoft admits it can break VPNs; A fix is in development.

Quickly installing the latest security updates is a (good) reflex for millions of Windows users. Unfortunately, sometimes these fixes also cause annoying errors. This is the case April security update (KB5036893) for Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2008 that may block VPNs..

Microsoft acknowledged the problem when contacting support: “ Windows devices may experience VPN connection failures » after installing this update. So it’s very annoying, and temporary solutions while waiting for a promised fix are not very interesting.

You can remove the cumulative update (LCU) using the command line (instructions are not available to a first party), but if the VPN returns to normal after doing so, removing the LCU also means losing all previous security updates. ! Which is not a good idea…

Enterprise users can contact Microsoft Support directly for assistance. This isn’t the first time a Windows update has caused problems with VPNs. A year ago, Microsoft already investigated an issue with Wi-Fi VPN performance in Windows 11 after an update.
