“Order must prevail,” says Biden in the face of student mobilization for Gaza

President Joe Biden on Thursday broke his virtual silence on mobilizing against the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip that has been roiling American universities for two weeks to launch a call to order.

“Democratic action must be carried out without violence and with respect for the law” : this is how Joe Biden commented on the breaking up of pro-Palestinian camps and arrests on American university campuses.

Claiming to defend freedom of expression, the US president added that there is no place for anti-Semitism or any hate speech in the country : “Disagreement is essential to democracy, but dissent must never lead to disorder or deny the rights of others so that students can complete the semester and their academic studies.”

Since April 17, a wave of Palestinian mobilization in Gaza has swept across American campuses at forty universities from the Atlantic coast to California.

According to the latest estimates, around 1,750 people were arrested in 32 schools.
