TFC – Montpellier: “I don’t see why we couldn’t take the club to an even higher level in the future”, says Rasmus Nicolaisen

the necessary
Vice-captain of TFC this season, Rasmus Nicolaisen has established himself as an essential part of the team since his arrival in 2021. Winner of the Ligue 2 championship and the Coupe de France, the 27-year-old Dane believes the club still has a lot of room for improvement.

You are officially kept in Ligue 1 since your win at Lorient on Sunday. Do you feel that the group is more liberated, or do you fear a relaxation?

I think we can play more liberated, that is positive. Between us we clearly told each other what we wanted for the end of the season: to finish strong, as high as possible and to go on holiday with a smile, with the feeling of having given everything. We will take match after match, but with the conviction that we can win everything.

How do you see the development of TFC in the coming years?

Since I arrived the club has made constant progress and we want that to continue. I feel strongly about this, and I feel that I am important in this process. I have responsibility, it is very motivating to be part of this adventure, of this progression. I don’t see why we couldn’t bring TFC to an even better level than today. We had difficulties in the first part of the season, it was much better afterwards. We are a very young team, with new players, new coaches. We needed time to get to know each other. It’s all a process. Today we are much more mature as a team. All of these elements together lead me to believe that we can still make great progress.

You had one of the most difficult matches of the season in the first leg in Montpellier, with a 3-0 loss. What memories do you have of it?

It was definitely one of our worst games. We have a strong desire for revenge. In this first leg, we had just played against Liverpool three days earlier in the Europa League. We were a new club in this competition, with a great need to gain knowledge, especially on how to sequence matches well.
So we have a strong desire to come back after this first leg, and take revenge on Montpellier. And then there’s a regional shocker … I’d love to beat them.
