British actor Bernard Hill, who played supporting roles in the successful films “Titanic” and “The Lord of the Rings,” died on Sunday at the age of 79, his agent announced.

Captain Edward Smith or King Theoden no longer exists, depending on which role he recalls in the collective memory. British actor Bernard Hill, who starred in the hit films “Titanic” and “The Lord of the Rings,” died at the age of 79, Sunday, May 5, his agent announced.

Originally from Manchester, Bernard Hill is mainly known to the general public for his role as Titanic Captain Edward Smith in James Cameron’s film of the same name which was released in 1997 and became a worldwide hit.

His agent, Lu, told British media that the actor died early Sunday morning.

A prolific career on British television

He also played the role of King Théoden of Rohan in the trilogy based on “The Lord of the Rings”, which was released in the early 2000s, and played many supporting roles, such as in “At the Sources of the Nile” by Rob Rafelson (1990) or Judgment Guilty (1999). Directed by Clint Eastwood.

Unearthed in the early 1980s for his role as an unemployed man in the multi-award winning TV series Boys from the Blackstuff, Bernard Hill has also had a prolific career in British television.
