Donkey Kong 3D on Switch: Canceled Project

Rumors have recently circulated about a new 3D Donkey Kong game being developed for the Nintendo Switch. Insider Liam Robertson confirmed these speculations, but revealed the sad news that the game had been canceled some time ago.

This ambitious project began during the Wii U era, shortly after the integration of Nintendo characters, including Donkey Kong, into Skylanders SuperChargers.

Vicarious Visions spearheaded this project in 2016 under the specific leadership of Shigeru Miyamoto.

However, development lasted only six months. Activision decided to redirect all resources from Vicarious Visions to the Call of Duty series and Diablo 2 Remastered, which was the last straw for Vicarious Visions founders Karthik and Guha Bala. They then left the company and founded Velan Studios, which has since collaborated with Nintendo on Mario Kart Live: Home Tour.

Interestingly, Activision also reportedly canceled Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater for the same reason, demonstrating the problems that even the most established video game development studios face.
