MLS match highlights: Lionel Messi shines ahead of Inter Miami’s visit to Montreal

The May 11 match has long been surrounded by Montreal soccer fans, namely the visit of Inter Miami to Montreal for a match against CFM.

But before knowing whether Lionel Messi will be in the lineup next Saturday, the latter showed up against the New York Red Bulls in a 6-2 win.

The Argentine became the first MLS player to reach the 10-goal mark this season and set up the team’s other five goals, three of which were scored by Luis Suarez. Contributing to all six of the team’s goals and assisting five times, Messi set records in MLS history for both statistics.

The game started well for the New York squad with Dante Vanzeir netting in the 30th minute.

Miami’s offensive machine then got going. Messi gave the ball in the 48th minute to Matias Rojas who fired a beautiful shot that gave the goalkeeper no chance to equalise.

A turnover allowed Suarez to pass the ball to Messi in the box to put his side in control two minutes later. The Inter Miami star set up Rojas to score his second goal of the game. The latter carried out a great maneuver to gain the upper hand over Carlos Coronel afterwards.

Messi then assisted teammate Suarez’s three goals in a row between the 65th and 81st minutes. The latter managed a fine shot on the volley to open his counter attack and he followed up with two other nets.

CF Montreal awaits Miami at Stade Saputo for the second meeting against this team since the start of the 2024 campaign. It remains to be seen if he will stay on Canadian soil.
