“Good lighting for Finistère”: the pride of Jean le Cam, a month before the Olympic flame passed

He will be one of the 11,000 porters chosen across the country to celebrate the Olympic Games. A month before the arrival of the Olympic flame in Finistère, navigator Jean le Cam spoke about the heavy responsibility that awaits him on June 7 in Port-la-Forêt, his home port.

FBBI: What does that mean to you?

Jean le Cam: At the moment we do not yet know exactly how it will happen, but we were chosen among many people and we are very proud to be the first bearer to welcome the Olympic flame to Finistère. There is good lighting, it will give some visibility to Port-la-forêt, to the world of sailing and to Finistère in general. Afterwards, there are many others who will carry the Olympic flame. I am just a small link in the big chain.

When the branch council offered it to you, did you say yes right away or did you need time to think about it?

No, I didn’t think, sometimes you have to know not to think. France hosting the Olympic Games is also not every year, every four years, it is a big event for me, for France. So it is a positive message, a message also to attract people to our department.

A little stress for the flame, it absolutely must not go out?

That is for sure ! But I imagine that everything is planned since it is on its way to sea at Belem, I know there is protection, a close watch over the flame so that it does not go out. So I imagine it will be the same.

Have you ever thought about your appearance on the big day?

Never ! Until then I have a lot to do, so it might be two or three days before that, that’s all. Maybe if my hair is too long, I’ll go to the hairdresser (laughs). And then we’ll see how we adapt. I hope the weather will be nice and that there will be people here in Port-la-Forêt following the event.
