South African authorities have arrested more than 600,000 people suspected of involvement in various crimes since the launch of ” Operation Chanel » in May 2023, the South African Police Service (SAPS) announced on Monday.

More than 71,000 targeted crime prevention operations in densely populated areas were carried out by police officers in the country’s nine provinces“, said the head of coordination of national operations, Mashadi Selepe, at a press briefing.

Emphasizing that most of those arrested were for attacks with the intention of causing serious bodily harm, he stated that more than 2,500 people were arrested for murder, 183 for human trafficking and almost 3,500 for illegal possession of firearms.

Furthermore, Mr. Selepe reported that looting of public infrastructure remains a major problem in the country, with more than 170,000 kg of copper cables seized by police in the same period.

South Africa has a reputation as one of the most dangerous countries in the world. Crime continues to worsen there, and the rate of murders, armed attacks, kidnappings, rapes and other crimes is higher than in most other countries in the world.

The latest crime statistics revealed by the police paint a grim picture of the security situation in the country. They reveal that from October 1 to December 31, 2023, 7,710 people were killed.
