The Ukrainian Federation announced the sad news in a press release on Monday 6 May.

Ukrainian weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko, who notably participated in the Olympic Games in Rio, died at the front, the Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation announced on Monday, May 6.

At the age of 30, Pielieshenko won two European Championship titles in 2016 and 2017. He finished fourth in the 85 kg category in Rio in 2016.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you that the heart of the great Ukrainian sportsman Oleksandr Pielieshenko has stopped beating,” the association wrote in a press release.

The coach of the Ukrainian weightlifting team, Victor Slobodianiuk, wrote on Facebook that Pielieshenko “died a hero defending Ukraine.” Piliesenko joined the Ukrainian armed forces at the start of the Russian offensive in February 2022, the Ukrainian Olympic Committee recalled.
