Moheli Island was hit hard by the cholera epidemic. Following heavy rains in late April, health authorities recorded an alarming rise in the number of cases. In medical centers where 5 positive tests were recorded per day, there are 14 daily.

Prefect Fomboni decided by decree 1uh In May 2024, close restaurants, ban the sale of cakes and kebabs on the streets and stop selling fresh fish in markets.

These decisions will be reversed as soon as the epidemiological situation allows.

Meanwhile, only traders with refrigerated tables and meeting the requirements related to this exceptional situation will be able to continue their activities, reports La Gazette des Comoros.

Moheli Island has just over 53,000 inhabitants. The cholera epidemic affecting this land, the smallest in the Comoros archipelago, is causing great concern. Since the end of February, medical teams have counted 393 cases of cholera, including 53 since the beginning of May. In one week, four patients died from the disease.

To limit the spread of bacteria, the prefecture and city hall of Fomboni decided to open a new landfill. Schools remain open. The priority of teachers and school nutrition teams is to ensure children’s hygiene and offer them healthy and balanced meals.

Late Monday afternoon, the prefecture, with the consent of the island’s elected officials, decided to place the village of Ndrondoni under quarantine. This will be the epicenter of the epidemic.
