A spot measuring 200,000 km has formed on the Sun.

A huge spot appeared on the Sun. What’s about to happen?

Active sun

Solar activity appears to be picking up speed again. Severe disturbance is visible to the naked eye using simple glasses used to view the eclipse. This location is called AR3664. Scientists estimate its size to be 200,000 km, or about 15 times larger than our Earth. But what are the consequences of such an event?

Large solar flares

When our star is activated in this way, large solar flares can occur. These coronal mass ejections cause the northern lights, but can also have other, more dire consequences. If there was a major Category X event, the most powerful eruption, our communications systems could be paralyzed.

Memory of 1859

A spot of the same size was reported in 1859. The 1859 geomagnetic storm, also called the Carrington event, was so powerful that auroras were visible as far away as Cuba and Hawaii. According to a Spaceweather.com source, point AR3664 is unlikely to repeat the 1859 event.
