At just 17 years old, Endrick already has his share of critics. The future Real Madrid player had a full match with his club Palmeiras in the Copa Libertadores (South American Champions League) this Thursday, May 9, during the team’s 5-0 victory, but it was not his performance that led to debates about him.

While scoring the 3-0 goal with a header at the far post against Uruguayan club Liverpool of Monteviedo, the player born in 2006 celebrated this achievement by mimicking a gorilla. This heightened the already palpable tension and a fight broke out.

“It has nothing to do with racism. I did it against Independiente and it was well received. It was a great celebration. I was close to their fans and spoke Spanish. Their defender, Mathias, got it and another player didn’t like “I’m celebrating by imitating a monkey because I’m a fan of Planet of the Apes and what matters is that I’m happy,” he said in a comment.

After the brawl, Endrick received a yellow card. As a reminder, Real Madrid secured his services for the sum of 35 million euros. He will join “The White House” from July 2024, when he turns 18.
