Nurses call out government for broken promises

After the agreement between the government and the professional unions representing healthcare executives, there was a lull in the healthcare sector. But this appeasement was short-lived as tensions have returned in recent days and there is currently a nationwide strike by nurses.

Nurses and health technicians are not giving up and have announced that they are leading a three-day national strike, from Wednesday to Friday, in order to make their voice heard and, above all, challenge the Government on its “promises”.

The strike applies to all nurses and health technicians working in health centers and hospitals, except for emergency services, intensive care and resuscitation, which are still the priority and responsibility of these health workers.

On Thursday, they responded to the call of the Independent Union of Nurses by leading a protest in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Health. They condemn the failure to implement the agreement reached between the unions and the government and condemn the failure of the executive branch to fulfill its obligations.

In addition to the unchanged basic agreement that the nurses and health technicians denounce, pointing out what they call the “intentional disrespect” of the Government according to the minutes of the signed agreement, they believe that other points remain unresolved.

These points concern the increase of salaries of health personnel, the determination of the starting date of payment and promotions for certain categories of nurses. This strike by health workers, which was organized at the end of March, looks like a reminder to the government before May 1, which coincides with Labor Day.

As a reminder, the health unions reached an agreement with the government, which provided for an increase in the salaries of nurses by 1,500 dirhams per month and additional allowances for guards and management.
