Now we know what the download size is for One UI 6.1… and in this case, the new version of the software for Samsung smartphones is far from being lightweight.

As planned, Samsung is starting to roll out the latest version of its One UI software to more Galaxy smartphones and tablets, especially targeting the high-end models released last year. This rollout is part of Samsung’s normal software update process… except that with the One UI 6.1 we’re looking at today, Samsung has changed how it works.

Typically, between major updates that accompany each new version of Android, Samsung makes do with two minor updates (besides security patches). One UI 6.1 should have been one of these two small ones updates, but this does not take into account the Galaxy AI platform that it installs on the corresponding older generation smartphones. As a result, One UI 6.1 isn’t really what you’d call a lightweight model: it itself weighs more than Android 14 and One UI 6.0 combined.

Small update that pops up there

One UI 6.1 requires 3GB, almost 1GB more than One UI 5.1 last year. As stated above, the scope of this new update is non-trivial and has a lot to do with the arrival of Galaxy AI capabilities on “older” Samsung smartphones. For them, One UI 6.1 is almost equivalent to a major system update.

Rolling out this (big) new feature to more smartphones and tablets makes the arrival of One UI 6.1 a little more exciting than the arrival of One UI 5.1 at the time. A scenario worth relishing because it is unlikely that Samsung will launch a completely new platform every year like Galaxy AI that can change the rules of the game on its devices.
