The consumer price index fell slightly in Marrakech at the end of February

The consumer price index (CPI) in the city of Marrakech experienced a decrease of 0.3% in the month of February 2024 compared to the previous month, going from 119.3 to 118.9.

This variation is the result of the decrease of 0.7% in the index for food products and 0.1% in the index for non-food products, indicates the Regional Directorate of the High Commission for Planning (HCP) in Marrakech. -Safi in his summary note on the evolution of the IPC in the city of Marrakech between January and February 2024.

According to the HCP, the indexes of food and non-food products fell by 0.7% and 0.1% respectively.

The food class indices recorded a decline between January and February 2024, in particular for the prices of “Fish and Seafood” by 13.7%, “Vegetables” by 7.4%, “Bread and Cereals” by 0.2% and “Oils and fats” and “Mineral water, refreshing drinks, fruit and vegetable juices (ND)” by 0.1%, MAP reports.

On the other hand, prices increased by 4.7% for “Fruit”, by 1.4% for “Sugar, Jam, Honey, Chocolate and Confectionery”, by 1% for “Meat” and by 0.3% for “ Coffee, tea and cocoa”. .
The variations in the indices of non-food products observed between January and February 2024 range from a decrease of 0.3% for “Transport” to an increase of 0.1% for “Health”, “Leisure and culture” and “Restaurants and Hotels”.

The index for the first two months of 2024 increased by 1.4% compared to the same period of 2023, from 117.4 to 119.1.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the CPI for the month of February 2024 in the city of Marrakech recorded an increase of 0.4%, going from 118.4 to 118.9, reflecting the increase in the index for non-food products by 0.7% and the decrease in that of foodstuffs by 0.1%.

The decreases in food products observed in the month of February 2024, compared to the same month of the previous year, mainly concern “Vegetables” by 20% and “Bread and Cereals” by 2.7%.

In contrast, prices increased by 8.3% for “Oils and fats”, by 6% for “Meat”, by 5.6% for “Coffee, tea and cocoa”, by 5.5% for “Mineral water, refreshing drinks, fruit and cocoa”. Vegetable Juices (ND)”, with 4.6% for “Fish and Seafood”, with 2.9% for “Fruit”, with 1.8% for “Sugar, Jam, Honey, Chocolate and Confectionery” and 1.7% for “Milk, Cheese and Eggs”.

As for the variations in non-food products recorded in the month of February 2024 compared to the same month of the previous year, they range from a decrease of 0.3% for “transport” and “Leisure and culture” to an increase of 4.1% for “Education”.
At a national level, the CPI experienced a decrease of 0.3% in the month of February 2024 compared to the previous month.

The largest declines in the CPI were recorded in Al-Hoceima with 0.8%, in Béni-Mellal with 0.7%, in Errachidia with 0.6%, in Safi with 0.4%, in Casablanca, Fez, Kenitra , Marrakech, Rabat, Meknes and Dakhla with 0.3% and Agadir with 0.2%.
