Their latest work skillfully reinterprets the classics of French song. he meets.

How is this complicity between you, as artists and friends, expressed in your musical works?

We were born and raised together in Saint-Denis, and have known each other for over 30 years. Our shared passion for music and singing has always been present. As sisters, friends and colleagues, we are a united team capable of overcoming any obstacle together. From the beginning, our voices fit together naturally, which greatly facilitates our musical work. I don’t think I would sing like this with other artists.

Where does this great openness you show towards music come from?

I think our education in Saint-Denis, steeped in urban culture, played a major role. As multi-instrumentalists, we are trained in demanding musical environments, such as the Maîtrise de Radio France and the Conservatory.

Meanwhile, we were attending school in the 16th arrondissement of Paris and returning to our families in the evening in Saint-Denis. This mixture of cultures allowed us to explore different musical genres, from rap to classical music, which greatly expanded our horizons.

Since creating LEJ in 2013, it has enjoyed notable success, with international tours and awards such as the Victoire de la Musique in 2017. What impact has this recognition had on you?

Receiving Victoire de la Musique was a defining moment for us. Suddenly we felt legitimate. Previously, we were not always comfortable, despite the hype caused by our mashups (covers with rearrangements of many songs by other artists with the same title) in 2015.

At that time, we never imagined that we would achieve such success or such vision. Experiencing this overnight was strange and didn’t always make us feel very comfortable.

The 2017 wins really boosted our confidence, especially on stage, where we finally felt like we had our place.

Does your latest album, Volume Two, represent a return to basics?

This new EP introduces younger audiences to the favorite tunes of our grandparents. We perform covers of great French artists such as Serge Gainsbourg, Edith Piaf, Renaud or Barbara’s authors that young people sometimes forget.
