“We too often forget the fourth trimester of pregnancy.”

Pregnancy usually lasts 3 months. However, not much has been said about the fourth trimester of this pregnancy. “This fourth trimester is the weeks or months after birth during which all the attention will be on the baby and not on the mother when she really needs it,” explains Laudine Lahaie, responsible for research at Soralia (Solidaris network).

We also talk about the postpartum period. “This is a period of enormous physical, emotional and organizational upheaval during which mothers often feel very alone and without the resources to cope,” she adds. However, this topic remains taboo. “It stays that way because motherhood is supposed to sell dreams. As a result, anything that disrupts this glamorous image is hushed up or minimized.”

Meeting the needs of others

Motherhood is often associated with the concept of maternal instinct. Is this a myth or reality? “This is a myth,” says Lodin Lahai. “If women seem more comfortable with children and older people, it is because they have been taught from a very young age to meet the needs of others before their own.”

And solidarity in all this? It seems that this period that women experience after giving birth is more important than ever. “Being able to talk about your experiences helps overcome shame and guilt when you face the challenges of motherhood. It’s a springboard to dare to ask for help.”

Solidaris calls for more maternity leave, more support at home, but also less pressure on mothers to be perfect.
