Oral vaccine against urinary tract infections

9 years of peace

As Dr. Bob Young, a urologist who led the study, explains, “Prior to receiving the vaccine, all of our participants suffered from recurrent urinary tract infections, which can be difficult to treat for many women.”

But once administered, the result was convincing: 54% of participants remained free of urinary tract infections for nine years without any noticeable side effects. And for those who developed cystitis again, “simply drinking plenty of water was enough to cure it,” the authors explain.

“While we must be pragmatic, this vaccine represents a potential breakthrough in the prevention of urinary tract infections and may offer a safe and effective alternative to traditional treatments. Many of our participants told us that the vaccine restored their quality of life,” the scientists conclude. “This vaccine is very easy to administer and can be given by GPs over a three-month course. »

Please note: in France, recurrent cystitis is defined as four or more urinary tract infections within 12 months.
