Ministerial visit to CREPS in the Antilles and Guyana: Darmanin and Guénevoux in the temple of high-level sports

CREPS in the Antilles and Guyana is recognized as the second reference campus for high-level sports in France. Its history, as a national public establishment, is deeply linked to the regular emergence of great sports champions, some of whom were discovered and trained there: Marie-Josée Perec, Christine Arron, Roger Bambuck, Laura Flessel, Wilhem Bélocian, Willy Roseau, and many others.

Teddy Riner, the champion from Guadeloupe, chose the Center for Resources, Expertise and Sports Performance (CREPS) in Les Abymes in Guadeloupe, as the starting point for the preparations for the Olympic Games in 2024.

CREPS, located in Guadeloupe since 1965, now welcomes international Olympic and Paralympic delegations under the leadership, for the first time, of a woman. Chantal Cusset-Gaydu at the head of this institution since 1 July 2023.

Unique of its kind in the Antilles-Guyana region, CREPS was awarded the Grand INSEP label built around four structuring pillars: “train well”, “take good care of yourself”, “live well”, “train well” .

“Our mission is to welcome high-level athletes, support them and offer them optimal training conditions. Provide a flawless environment to support them in their quest for achievement.” declares Chantal Cusset-Gaydu, director of CREPS Antilles-Guyana. An ambition was reaffirmed during the meeting on 18 April 2024 with Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior and Overseas Territories, and young athletes hoping for big sporting careers.

The future masters could share their projects during this meeting. Holding a microphone, the minister addressed young athletes, expressing hope to see many of them become champions, while stressing the importance of not neglecting studies. He added that everything they learn here will be important general knowledge to succeed in life. “Thank you for your commitment”, concluded the minister before taking a souvenir photo with all the young people present.

Since 2017, the state has transferred the CREPS site as well as all related constructions to the Guadeloupe region.

The regional authority is responsible for the maintenance and rehabilitation of CREPS equipment as well as the construction of new infrastructure that is necessary for the development of the public sector’s operations.

The latest achievements concern the swimming pool, the gymnasium, the associated athletics track, the fencing room. A high-level platform to also attract international delegations.

The request deeply moved Chantal Cusset-Gaydu, who is the first woman to run this establishment. Ary Chalus thus expresses his desire to see this award bestowed on a person who not only marked the establishment of his leadership, but who also contributed significantly to the social and sporting field.
