Football: Youcef Belaïli apologizes after an act of violence against a referee

The former Brest attacking midfielder took to his Instagram account to apologize for his behavior towards a referee. The player had been aggressive towards the latter after receiving a yellow card in the quarter-finals of the Algerian Cup.

“I sincerely apologize for my behavior during the last match. I know I got carried away by the pressure and expressed my frustration inappropriately to you.” It is with these words that the attacking midfielder of MC Alger, Youcef Belaïli, made his mea culpa after being aggressive towards the referee Ghada Mehat during the quarter-finals of the Algerian Cup on Sunday 14 April.

While his team faced Wa Tlemcen, Belaïli did not appreciate receiving a yellow card. The former Brest player then grabbed the referee’s arm before pushing the ball in his direction.

No red card, but a fine

The player did not receive a red card, but he was eventually fined 100,000 dinars (around 700 euros) by the Algerian Football League.

In his publication, the athlete adds: “I recognize that this was not fair on my part and I deeply regret my actions […] I assure you that my reaction was not directed at you personally. I know you have a difficult role to play and I respect your commitment to sport. I would like to sincerely apologize for my inappropriate behavior and hope that you can accept my apology. I am committed to working on my stress and pressure management to prevent this from happening again in the future.”

In two months, Youcef Belaïli was sanctioned twice by the Algerian Football League for misbehaving with the refereeing body.
