Sting. City of Dukes revealed thanks to archaeological excavations

The Center for Archaeological Research (CRAA) on Rue Abbe Pierre in Aiguillon is offering an exhibition on the history of Aiguillon from the 11th to the 18th centuries until 25 October. Free tours are available by appointment. Registration (07 64 86 04 41.)

Over the decades, numerous excavations have been carried out in the Aiguillon commune, first by the team of Dr. Reginato and then, since 2001, by approved operators at sites such as Lagravise, Chastel, Grand Jean, Lalanne, Peyrelongue, Barbeau…). More recently, archaeological excavations and studies have been carried out in front of the development of three squares (Espio, Clemenceau and 14 July) and in the surrounding streets. The CRAA and the town hall of Aiguillon sought to present to the inhabitants of Aiguillon and outside the Lot-et-Garonne the results obtained by the archaeologists and historians responsible for these studies, before work began on the development of the squares in the city center. . Archaeologists excavated the remains presented in this exhibition.

After an introduction to the methods of excavation, historical research, etc.), a brief reminder will be offered of the history of Aiguillon from the beginnings to the 11th century: (the birth of the city and castles, the castle of Fossa, the Castres of Lunaka, the creation of the bastide of Aiguillon and finally the construction of the castle of the Dukes of Aiguillon ).

The daily life of the inhabitants will be examined through the presentation of medieval and modern housing (several models), food, crafts, etc. Part will be devoted to religion and burials, epidemics, wars and their consequences for the local population. The exhibition is prepared by the Archaeological Research Center of Aiguillon in collaboration with DRAC Nouvelle-Aquitaine, SCOP Hadès, the company EVEHA and INRAP, approved archaeological operators active in Aiguillon and Aquitaine, and with all technical support from the services of the town hall of Aiguillon and the Heritage Department of Lot-et-Garonne . Curator of the exhibition: Gérald Mijon, Honorary Chief Curator of the Heritage, Secretary of the CRAA, with the valuable assistance of Didier Fromenteau, Hervé Wehrung and Alain Barbeyron. The exhibition will be curated by Gulla Gonella, an archaeology student, and Joanna Fromanteau, a communications student.
