40 years of news in Lorraine: the victory of the SLUC Nancy Basket in the Korac Cup in 2002

As part of the 40th anniversary of France Bleu Sud Lorraine, this Wednesday we look back at one of the great sporting events of these decades, the victory of SLUC Nancy Basket in the Korac Cup in 2002.

In 2002, SLUC became Nancy Basket The third French club to win a European Cup, the now defunct Korac Cup. A remarkable journey achieved by the Cougars who suffered only one defeat in the preliminary round and in the group stage (101-98 loss in Porto).

Then, during direct confrontations, the Nancy players eliminated the Germans from Leverkusen in the 8th final that is Dijon in the quarter-finals, the Slovenians of Lasko in the semi-finals and finally the Russian from Mineralnye Vody from Rostov.

This back-and-forth final remains in many memories. The Nancy team won by 26 points in the first leg in Gentilly before losing by 21 points in the return leg in Russia, April 17, 2002. When they returned, they were celebrated at Place Stanislas in front of several thousand supporters. The event then disappeared, merged to give the Eurocup.

A retrospective of this great adventure written by the players of the time: Goran Bošković, Ross Land, Stevin Smith, Cyril Julian, Fabien Dubos, Joseph Gomis, Vincent Masingue, Maxime Zianveni, Gary Phaeton, Danilo Cmiljanic, Mouhamadou Mbodji
