Google Chromecast 4K 2024 coming soon with improved performance and new remote control

Chromecast 4K with Google TV was released in 2020 to compete with the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K. The device was joined in 2022 by a less powerful 1080p model, and buyers are still waiting for its successor. According to the latest information from 9to5Google, the wait is almost over as Google is expected to soon introduce a new model that will come with an updated remote control.

Google has reportedly moved the volume buttons from the side to the front of the remote and introduced a new star button that can be used as a user-programmable favorites button. The touch scroll wheel will remain, as will the oval shape, as well as the built-in microphone for voice control of the HDMI dongle. While the current model is still based on Android 12, we can assume that the new model will ship with Android 14 and hence will have a new home screen and an improved audio output switch.

There is no additional information about the hardware of the HDMI dongle yet. 9to5Google suggests that Google will replace the 12nm ARM Amlogic S905X3 chip with the new Amlogic S905X5 and its four efficient Cortex-A53 cores. The new 6nm chip reduces power consumption by up to 50%, and the Mali-G310 GPU is also capable of decoding the AV1 codec. Other specs could also be expanded, as the current Chromecast 4K, with just 2GB of RAM and 8GB of flash storage, offers fairly limited working memory and app storage space.
