Figueres (Spain) is located near the French-Catalan border, a 45-minute drive from Perpignan (Eastern Pyrenees), and is particularly famous as the birthplace of the artist Salvador Dali. On site and in the surrounding area, many places allow you to learn more about the painter and fully immerse yourself in his world. This is the perfect way to follow in the footsteps of the genius painter.

Birthplace of Salvador Dali

What better way to start this journey than by visiting Dali’s birthplace? This is where the Surrealist artist was born on May 11, 1904 and where he spent the first eight years of his life. After nearly 30 years of design, “Casa Natal de Salvador Dalí” will open to the public in October 2023.

Three more Dalian places

If heritage lovers can continue their discovery of Figueres by going to Sant Ferran Castle, considered the largest bastion fortress in Europe, Dali lovers should leave the city to continue their journey. He first headed to his permanent residence in Portligat, where he lived until the death of his wife, Gala, in 1982. Today the place is a museum. This “pilgrimage” ends at the last place where the painter lived, the Pubol Castle, near Girona.

However, to discover the largest collection of Dali’s works, you will have to go beyond Catalonia to St. Petersburg, Florida (USA), at the Salvador Dali Museum. In France, the largest private collection is in Dali Paris, at 11 rue Polbot, Paris 18.
