Bazzite Linux is a custom Fedora Atomic Desktop image designed to replace Windows as a gaming-focused operating system. Buzzite 3.0 improves support for a number of portable devices and introduces significant updates to the software itself.
First, Bazzite 3.0 updates to Fedora 40 and Linux kernel version 6.8, which should bring a host of updates including better scheduling, better power management, and better performance on new CPUs like the Intel Core Ultra series and GPUs like iGPUs Intel Arc. There’s also improved support for a number of new game controllers and other gaming hardware, including the Steam Deck and OLED Deck.
The kernel update includes new Nvidia and AMD drivers to improve gaming performance and take advantage of new features such as the Wayland explicit synchronization protocol for Nvidia GPUs, which was recently added to System76’s Cosmic DE.
Bazzite 3.0 now ships by default with KDE Plasma 6 and Gnome 46, allowing the image to adapt to the latest and greatest desktop environments and providing features such as desktop tearing and HDR support for games. It’s also dropping X11 support for everything except Nvidia images, likely in part to support HDR and better fractional upscaling.
A number of software fixes and updates are also included in Bazzite 3.0, which comes with Steam, Lutris and Discord pre-installed by default, while tools such as Decky Loader, EmuDeck, RetroDECK and ProtonUp-Qt are optional and can be installed during installation. .
On the hardware side, the Bazzite 3.0 changelog specifically mentions improved support for the Lenovo Legion Go (currently $649.99 at Lenovo in the US) and Asus ROG Ally (currently $699.99 at Best Buy). The Bazzite 3.0 portable daemon and overlay now has built-in TDP configuration and controller emulation settings for on-the-fly setup without having to resort to the SteamUI interface via Decky.
Bazzite 3.0 also takes care of some of the Steam Deck’s OLED display, which was previously completely incompatible with the operating system. Bazzite 3.0 now installs and runs on the Steam Deck OLED display, although it appears to be riddled with bugs and issues. The developers promise to fix these problems in a future update. HDR on the Steam Deck OLED display is mostly functional at this time, however some games do not work with HDR on Bazzite.
In addition to Steam Deck OLED and the aforementioned Lenovo and Asus laptops, Bazzite 3.0 is now fully supported for Ayn Loki Zero and Ayn Loki Max, while Oneexplayer X1 is partially supported, with full support coming soon.
